Three on a String, performing at 1 p.m., is a Birmingham-based folk-comedy trio playing all kinds of music — classic standards, country, bluegrass and folk mixed with comedy and humor suitable for the entire family, from a heart-rending country song to an unexpected a cappella rendition. In the fall of 1970, Jerry Ryan and Bobby Horton, friends at Samford University in Birmingham, played at an outdoor folk festival. Jerry, a guitar player, and Bobby, a banjo picker, earned $15 each for their first performance. Mentor and friend George Pruett suggested they add a bass player who was a vocalist. Bobby knew a fellow student, John Vess, and they became the group who brought bluegrass-folk-comedy to Birmingham. The first “Three On A String” band debuted at the Lowenbrau Haus in Homewood. Later, the band regularly played at Cadillac Café in Southside and Stage Door in Homewood. Three On A String has performed before presidents and with symphony orchestras, toured the United States and Canada, opened for top country acts, recorded albums, performed on TV and was inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame with the Governor’s Achievement Award. Eighteen people have been members of the group, including Joe Estes, Shelton Harden, Andy McGinnis, Terry Ryan, Gordon Burt, Mark Weldon, Cline “Rowdy” Yates and Dick Wilson. Current bassist is Brad Ryan, Jerry’s son. After 37 years, Three On A String still performs audience-enthralling music combined with a huge dose of comedy.
LeFevre Gospel Quartet, of Atlanta, performing at 2:30 p.m., continues a family tradition that began in 1921 as the original LeFevre Trio began singing around the country and set the standard for Southern gospel music. When the original members retired in the 1970s, Mylon LeFevre & Broken Heart became a top contemporary Christian act. Today, the family name is stronger than ever. In 2005, a new sound emerged onto the gospel music scene as four vocalists formed a partnership known as The LeFevre Quartet. The musical objective was to fill each vocal position with the best in their field. The spiritual objective was for each of those individuals to have a sincere passion for people and for their relationship with God. Only one year after forming, fans voted them the 2006 Horizon Group of the Year at the Singing News Fan Awards. Members are Jeremy Easley, tenor; David Staton, lead; Mike LeFevre, baritone; Keith Inman, bass and Jordan LeFevre, drummer.
